Netflix’s “The Deliverance” was directed by Lee Daniels and casting includes: Audra Day, Glenn Close, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Mo’Nique, Demi Singleton, Caleb McLaughlin and Omar Epps. As the film opens it tells us that it is based on true events which we later find out were inspired by the life of Latoya Ammons. The religious horror film is set in Pittsburg Pennsylvania in 2011. Audra Day’s character Ebony lives with her 3 children and mother, played by Glenn Close. They recently moved into a home and events unravel quickly in a supernatural way, compounded by the ongoing stressors already present in the family.

Spoiler-free Pros and Cons to decide if you want to Watch it or Skip it.
Pros to watch The Deliverance:
- Glenn Close and Audra Day. Right from the beginning of the film before much begins to happen it is clear that both Glenn Close and Audra Day were at the top of their acting games. Both are authentic and comfortable in their characters and the delivery is believable.
- Based on True Events. True Crime TV is a fascination of many and if that fits you, then you can do some research and go down a rabbit hole comparing the film to the true events.
- Pacing and supporting cast. Every scene is useful and adds to the plot. The supporting cast add to the scenes even if they appear unimportant.
Cons:
- Not that scary. If you’re looking for something that will keep you up afterwards, I didn’t find The Deliverance truly terrifying; however, this con is more subjective, you may in fact be tempted to watch it during the daytime.
- Dialogue. Again, another subjective con, I found some of the dialogue during the scary scenes to be humorous, which probably says more about me than the film. You can let me know in the comments. At times, especially when things are ramping up, I found the script to have some attempts at comic relief that felt out of place in a horror film.

TIRRecommends: Yes, if only to see Glenn Close like you’ve not seen her before and Audra Day’s development toward becoming a great actress. An honorable mention to the pros list, if you’ve seen Lee Daniels’ movie Precious, you’ll likely get a kick out of Mo’Nique’s character’s career in The Deliverance.
Show Similarity (If you like these movies you will like The Deliverance): The Amityville Horror & The Exorcist
