Bob Marley: One Love – TIR Recommends

Bob Marley: One Love was released February 14, 2024 and is a biopic of Bob Marley.  Prior to going to see the film, I’d seen several reviews critiquing the use of non-Jamaican actors to play both Bob and Rita Marley.  I did not see the film right away and following the premiere there were several more reviews commenting that the film did not meet their standards, stating the biopic did not do justice to the life and greatness of Bob Marley.  As a result I was nervous going into it but tried to remain unbiased and unsullied based on reviews, determined to form my own opinion.

Bob Marley: One Love was excellent, both Kinsley Ben-Adir, who played Bob Marley and Lashana Lynch, who played Rita Marley, offered a unique and genuine portrayal of their respective roles.  The biopic centered around a limited timeframe and storyline and while there were glimpses in flashbacks of a teenage and young Marley, it did not do the thing we are used to from biopics and trail the life from childhood through adulthood.  I could see that as being disappointing for some viewers looking for a deeper dive into Marley’s upbringing and development.  However, It did not take away from the glimpses the audience was given.

The music was highlighted throughout the film in the most nostalgic way that created a feel-good atmosphere during the experience.  Kingsley Ben-Adair through being a fan or rigorous preparation for the film studied the mannerism of Mr. Marley and delivered a performance that did not require any stretch of the imagination to be sucked into the story and overall vibe of the era and musical genius being portrayed.

If you have yet to see Bob Marley: One Love, I’d recommend taking a break and experiencing the film.  Overall, I’d give it an 8/10 for the smile it kept on my face and will definitely rewatch it once it begins streaming if only to sing along to the plethora of classic songs featured. If you’ve already seen it, let me know your opinion in the comments.
