TIR Recommends: Netflix’s The Gentlemen

The Gentlemen is an 8 episode Action Comedy on Netflix release in March 2024.  The series was created by Guy Ritchie, who directed and produced the 2019 movie of the same name starring Matthew McConaughey, which I have not yet seen.  Having not seen the source movie, the series did not require any background information or prep ahead of time, in fact I did not know the movie existed until after watching the series.

The Netflix series stars Theo James as Eddie Halstead, whom I loved from The Time Traveler’s Wife, Kaya Scodelario, and a personal favorite Giancarlo Esposito.  James’ character Eddie is a soldier who returns home after his father’s death and inherits his title and lands although his not the eldest son.  Eddie’s brother Freddie, played by Daniel Ings, is in massive debt and has a cocaine addiction, likely the cause of him being passed over for the inheritance.

As Eddie takes on his new duties he learns his father was involved in an illegal marijuana business ran by Susie Glass and family.  Susie’s operation is being housed on Eddie’s land.  Eddie then goes on a mission to reclaim his family land and get out of the marijuana business.  Along the way he finds himself becoming more involved and quite good at it as well.

The Gentlemen is an easy and comedic watch filled with shenanigans and hijinks.  The plot is quite easy to follow and not very surprising although you can tell some of the reveals were meant to be just that.  The series under-used Giancarlo’s charisma and could have made some storylines less obvious.  That being said it is still worth the watch.  I’d give it a solid 7/10.
