Them: The Scare premiered on Amazon Prime Video on April 25th. It is the second season of the Horror Thriller Amazon Original series produced by Lena Waithe, the producer of The Chi and created by Little Marvin. The anthology horror thriller series begins season 2 set in 1991 in the midst of the Rodney King beating by the LAPD, where the main character Dawn, played by Deborah Ayorinde, is a black LAPD officer investigating the death of a foster mother that left her body in an unnatural post-mortem state.
Luke James plays a character named Edmund Gaines who is a struggling actor working simultaneously in a children’s entertainment establishment much like Chuck E. Cheese. The show plays out both stories side by side without revealing their immediate connection which becomes unraveled throughout the season.
Both Ayorinde and James are riveting in their roles. Ayorinde also starred as lead character in season one and is in a different character in season 2. James enters into the series as a new actor and character and does not disappoint. James delivers a convincingly terrifying and sad character that audiences can sympathize with his origin story. His is my favorite performance of the series.
Overall season 2 was not as good as season 1; however, it was a strong follow-up season that leaves me open to watching season 3 should it be renewed. I did not find myself as scared and anxious as I was while watching season 1. Season 2 was much less un-hinged and tamed than season 1. It lacked some of the horror and psychological supernatural atmosphere that season 1 was rich with. I give season 2 a solid 7/10. Give it a watch and let me know your thoughts.
